Due to poor weather conditions, we believe that after a long wait at 14,200ft the adventure for April and Bobby has ended. Late last night at 11:30pm they started descending down Mt. McKinley back to base camp. Currently at 1030pm the GPS tracker shows them at Talkeentna Airport. That was about a 20 hour hike for them to get back to base camp...that in itself is a great accomplishment. I think that April and Bobby deserve a round of applause!!!!! Making it to the summit would have been the ideal ending, but making it to 14,200ft is an amazing accomplishment...then having to wait there while the weather cleared is also an achievement. I am sure it was a hard decision for April and Bobby to make, but it shows just how professional these two are.
Dave and I have been so into this climb!! We have been on the Internet every night watching the SPOT tracker and researching the area they are going to. I feel like I have been on this climb with them....except I have been in a warm house, slept in a bed and had running water.
I am sad for them that this adventure is over. They prepared so hard for the climb. I can't wait to hear the stories and see the pictures!!! I am so excited for them that they got this opportunity. Welcome home out of the clouds!!!! See you soon!!

ReplyDeleteI talked to April and Bobby this afternoon and they sound great. They had a shower, fresh food and a good nights sleep. April said it was her best climb ever and described it as an amazing and wonderful journey. They plan to spend tonight in Talkeetna as well. I look forward to their pictures and journal entries. They will answer the many questions we all had while we watched them on SPOT.
That was the most amazing virtual climb I've ever done from my couch! Can't wait to hear the stories!
